Documents Required to Claim Age Relaxation
You can be eligible on paper and still have the relaxation stripped off at document verification. The rule is not about whether you belong to the category, it is about whether the certificate you hold is in the form the conducting body accepts. This page sets out which certificate goes with which category, and the format rules that decide whether it holds.
Certificate by category
The relaxation column is the upper-age allowance that goes with that category.
| Category | Relaxation | Certificate to carry |
|---|---|---|
| General | None | No relaxation certificate neededNothing to carry beyond the identity and address documents everyone needs. |
| EWS | None | EWS income certificate is still needed for reservationEWS gets no upper-age relaxation, but the income certificate is what secures the reserved-category quota in the application form. |
| OBC — Non-Creamy Layer | +3 years | OBC Non-Creamy Layer certificateMust be issued by a competent authority and be valid on the date fixed by the notification. |
| SC | +5 years | Caste certificate for SCIssued by the competent authority of the state of origin. For a candidate applying from outside that state, the issuing state issues a caste certificate. |
| ST | +5 years | Caste certificate for STIssued by the competent authority of the state of origin, in the same way. |
| PwBD — General / EWS | +10 years | Benchmark Disability certificateMust name the specific disability and carry the required percentage. Where several disabilities are present, the certificate has to reflect that. |
| PwBD — OBC | +13 years | Disability certificate plus OBC Non-Creamy Layer certificatePwBD and OBC together are allowed 13 years. These are not added up, and the certificate list in the notification lists 13 as one figure. |
| PwBD — SC / ST | +15 years | Disability certificate plus SC/ST certificateThe highest figure in the central schedule. Again a single figure of 15, not 5 plus 10. |
What to carry for every application
These are the documents that get asked for regardless of category.
- Class 10 marksheet or certificate, since it is the proof of date of birth the boards work from
- Class 12 marksheet, for posts that require it
- Degree or postgraduate certificate along with the consolidated marksheet
- Government photo identity document, such as Aadhaar, EPIC or passport
- Two or three passport-size photographs, in the size named in the notification
- Date of birth proof in the format the notification prescribes, where it differs from Class 10
- Previous employment experience or service certificate, for ex-servicemen claiming age relaxation
- Application form printout or acknowledgement, since document verification happens against it
Two rules that decide more applications than they should
Carry the original with one self-attested photocopy, because a photocopy on its own is refused. And carry the certificate as an original, not a photograph of one on a phone, which is what most candidates do at a busy verification counter.
Common questions
Why is age relaxation rejected even when I hold the right certificate?
Most rejections are format problems rather than certificate problems. The certificate has to be issued by the competent authority of the state you belong to, it has to be valid on the date the notification names, and in several central exams it has to be in the specific proforma prescribed for central employment. A state-format certificate on a different proforma is often rejected even when the substance is correct.
Do I carry the original or a photocopy?
Carry the original and one self-attested photocopy of each certificate. The originals are checked at document verification and returned on the spot. Photocopies alone are not accepted, and neither are mobile phone photographs of a certificate.
Is the certificate needed at application time or only later?
The relaxation claim has to be declared correctly in the application form itself, and the supporting certificate is demanded at document verification. You cannot add a relaxation afterwards by producing a certificate that you did not claim, so if you hold a valid certificate, claim it in the form at the time of applying.
What happens if I forget a document?
Verification is usually allowed a short window to produce a missing document, but it is treated as a deficiency and can end the candidature if the deadline passes. Missing original documents at document verification also bar you from the interview stage, not only from the written exam.
Does a state government job follow the same certificates?
The central schedule of age relaxation is followed by most states, but the issuing authority and the acceptable proforma are state-specific, and some states set their own relaxation table. Check the notification of the specific board rather than relying on the central figures.
